A Tribute to Freedom’s Heroes

Soldier Artists Create Musical Poppy
|
The federal government
named 2005 Canada’s Year of the Veteran.
This spring, two retired
soldiers, songwriter Jay Anthony Willis and singer
Jill Younghusband formed a partnership with Captain
Brian Greenwood and the Royal Canadian Artillery
Band to create a musical poppy, Proud Canadian
Soldier, to commemorate Canada’s Year of the
Veteran.
Mr. Willis was inspired
to write Proud Canadian Soldier in 1999 after
attending a Remembrance Day ceremony at the National
Monument in Ottawa. He found the right voice to sing
it when he met Jill Younghusband in 2004. The final
element was added when Captain Greenwood asked for
permission to write an arrangement after hearing Ms.
Younghusband and Mr. Willis perform the song.
At every live
performance of Proud Canadian Soldier by Ms.
Younghusband and the Royal Canadian Artillery Band
the response is positive, emotional and personal.
Now, a recorded version
of Proud Canadian Soldier is available for free
download on a website created by LIAP Media, Inc. at
www.ProudCanadianSoldier.com.
We hope that Proud
Canadian Soldier will inspire Canadians to
demonstrate their gratitude to Canada’s veterans.
The ProudCanadianSoldier.com website includes
suggestions about how Canadians and especially
students, teachers and parents can show their
gratitude.
We ask Canada’s media to
join our partnership. Inform the public about the
ProudCanadianSoldier.com website, play the Proud
Canadian Soldier song, especially on Remembrance Day
and publish short articles by students (see students
tab on website).
